Atina’s new initiative with support from Intesa Foundation: Safe steps toward independence
NGO Atina, with the support of the Intesa Foundation, a philanthropic organization, and in partnership with both public and private sectors, is launching a new project titled “Safe steps: Empowerment beyond survival - integrated support for victims of violence and human trafficking.”
The project aims to provide long-term support to women and girls who have survived human trafficking, offering opportunities for education, employment, and psychological recovery so that they can take safe steps forward - toward justice, dignity, and empowerment beyond mere survival.
In Serbia, many women who have experienced violence and trafficking face significant barriers: poverty, social isolation, lack of access to justice, education, and employment. These obstacles often create a vicious cycle that is nearly impossible to break without long-term, comprehensive support. Over the course of twelve months, this project aims to provide direct support to 150 women and children who have survived trafficking, empower 30 women through professional and practical training, support at least 80 women on their path to employment, and reach over 500 individuals, including professionals, decision-makers, and community members, through awareness-raising and capacity-building activities in the areas of protection, empowerment, and reintegration.
A key component of the project is the support services provided by Atina, including assisted housing and the Open Club day center, where women receive individualized support, such as legal assistance, psychological counseling, healthcare access, and opportunities for education and employment. Atina’s team is available 24/7 to ensure safety and stability for the women they serve.
A cornerstone of the initiative is also the construction of a new Counseling Center for the psychological recovery of trafficking survivors, set to open in mid-October 2025, which will provide a safe and welcoming space for therapy and healing.
Economic independence as a path to self-reliance
Economic independence is one of the most crucial steps toward self-reliance. For this reason, the project also includes training programs within Bagel Bejgl, Atina’s social enterprise, where women learn entrepreneurial and business skills. After completing the training, they will receive mentorship and employment support, while Atina works closely with employers to ensure safe and dignified job opportunities.
The project pays special attention to women from particularly vulnerable groups, including migrant women, Roma women, and women living in rural areas. Through mobile teams and workshops, information and support will reach them directly, while professionals working with survivors will also be trained to offer adequate and timely assistance.
More than support – a catalyst for long-term change
“Safe Steps” is not just about providing help — it’s about driving lasting change, both in women’s lives and within society as a whole. The goal is to ensure that the services women receive become part of long-term solutions, supported by public policies and funding.
This project marks an important step toward a future where every woman who has survived violence has the chance to live the life she deserves, a life with safety, support, and the opportunity to heal, grow, and move forward.
