Voices that push boundaries: Migrant women at the heart of the dialogue on justice and resistance

The Advocacy Group of Migrant Women, which has for years brought together courageous women with lived experience of forced migration through the organization Atina, once again demonstrated the importance of their stories and their role in society — not just as survivors, but as leaders of change and voices of reason in complex conversations about migration, rights, and social justice.

Their participation in the Third Summer Program on Forced Migration and Borders, jointly organized by Boston University and the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Political Sciences, in collaboration with the Migration Research Center MIGREC, was more than just a presentation — it was a powerful lesson in resistance, solidarity, and courage. The program, held in Belgrade from May 26 to June 8, 2025, brought together students, professors, and researchers from Serbia and the United States, intending to deepen understanding of the complex challenges of forced displacement through interdisciplinary and engaged knowledge exchange.

In the session titled “Gender and Migration”, members of the Advocacy Group shared personal experiences, challenges, and the ongoing struggle for dignity faced by women and LGBTQI+ individuals on the move. Their testimonies uncovered the often-invisible layers of violence, discrimination, and legal insecurity that migrant women face, while also highlighting the crucial role of civil society — especially organizations like Atina — in offering support and advocating for systemic change.

“Our experience should not be silenced. We have a voice, and we know how to use it,” said one group member from Burundi, while women from Iran and India shared stories about their integration process in Serbia and the everyday challenges they face in their new environment.

Participants of the program also had the opportunity to watch the documentary film "Voices for Justice", which follows the journey and growth of this group, showcasing the strength of solidarity and resistance through deeply personal testimonies. The film is a powerful reminder that the fight for justice begins when we refuse to be invisible. Watch the movie here.

The summer program once again underscored the importance of connecting academic knowledge with real-world practice and activism. Representatives of Atina — including members of the Advocacy Group — contributed through their active engagement, helping to create a space where authentic learning happens: through dialogue, solidarity, and authentic experiences.

This appearance, now in its third consecutive year, is a testament to the strong partnership between Atina and the Faculty of Political Sciences, with a special emphasis on the collaboration with Professor Natalija Perišić, whose work continues to empower the voices of women on the move.
