Sport has the power to cross boundaries, break down prejudice, and unite what politics often divides. That was precisely the spirit of the Girls Football Festival, held in Vienna from June 28 to 30, organized by the Fairplay initiative at VIDC, with the support of the European Union through the Sport Together project, UEFA, the football associations of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, and the Austrian Development Agency. This event was part of the broader Football Zajedno project, which promotes respect, inclusion, and equality through sport, with no exceptions.
The festival was dedicated to all girls and women in sport and carried a clear message: nationalism and intolerance have no place on the field. Instead, the festival nurtured solidarity, togetherness, and respect for diversity. The host, First Vienna FC 1984, warmly welcomed international teams at its training camp in Spielmannsgasse.
Over three days, Vienna became a hub of hope, unity, and youthful joy, as young footballers from Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Austria trained, learned, and celebrated football – and each other.
The first day began with an opening ceremony in the Vienna Prater, where the girls got to know each other and connect. In the spirit of technological innovation, robots prepared lunch at the Rollercoaster restaurant, adding even more excitement to the day.
The second day of the festival focused on overcoming social barriers. Girls were placed in mixed teams to bring together different cultures, languages, and identities. This was followed by a treasure hunt across Vienna’s most iconic spots, where football was played everywhere—in the streets, in improvised matches—all with a powerful message: football belongs to everyone. Gender equality, inclusion, and the spirit of unity were promoted every step of the way.
On the final day, the mixed teams played in tournament matches, showing how much can be achieved through cooperation and mutual support. Every goal was a celebration – not just of skill, but of teamwork and solidarity. Goal celebrations turned into dances choreographed by the girls and their coaches, and off the field, they learned traditional games while laughing and breaking down cultural barriers.
At the closing ceremony, all participants received medals and certificates, not only in recognition of their football talent but also as acknowledgment of their courage to be part of a movement that is changing society through sport, equality, and togetherness.
Atina extends special thanks to the Meraki Women’s Football Club from Niš. Though small and new, the club captured the hearts of many with its dedication and positive energy. Coach Ana Lilić, a former national team player, passionately passed on her love for football to a new generation of girls – authentically, powerfully, and deeply committed.
This festival was much more than a game for them – and for all of us. It was a lesson in solidarity, acceptance, and the courage to imagine a world where differences are a reason to connect, not divide.
Atina is proud to have been part of this unforgettable experience. We thank all the participants, organizers, and partners, and we hope this energy will continue to grow through future generations of girls, learning through football that it’s more than just a game.
Bravo to everyone who believes that sport is a driver of change!
